After years of farming beef cattle using different
European and British breeds, we finally hit a breed
that has everything that makes raising beef cattle
enjoyable for us. When comparing our fullblood Romagnola
cattle with other breeds we have raised, we find they
have enabled us to achieve the goal we had for our
farm. With the combination of heavier hips, long backs
and the placid nature, we feel confident this is the
breed to perform in the 21st century.
We have found that calving and other basic health
problems occurring with cow / calf operations are
not encountered with this breed. Their stately structure,
moderate birth weights and composed nature assure
a predictable offspring.
Our
August / September calving program should be harder
on our cows but they stand the test and produce quiet,
manageable calves. In January these 600 / 700 lb calves
are pail fed grain to familiarize them to people and
then out to pasture for the summer.
Not only do they have
visual appeal, but they have high yield characteristics
as well. Romagnola cattle are such a well-balanced
breed they perform favorably when bred for seedstock
or terminal cross. In our opinion, they are a breed
to investigate.
We have brought cattle in from other fullblood breeders
to enhance our herd genetic pool. This allows us to
sell some heifers while maintaining the herd size.
We sell our bull calves in the spring of the year
as they reach 8 to 10 months of age. Only animals
that grow well and enhance the breed are sold as breeding
stock.
